Photography best practices to capture sharp, readable question paper scans on any smartphone.
You don't need an expensive flatbed scanner to contribute! Any smartphone camera produced in the last several years can capture crisp, high-resolution scans when following a few basic photography practices.
5 Photography Rules for Sharp Scans
- 1. Place Paper Flat: Lay the question booklet completely flat on a table, desk, or clipboard. Smooth out sharp creases or rolled edges.
- 2. Shoot Directly Overhead: Hold your phone directly above the center of the sheet, parallel to the table. Avoid capturing from a steep side angle which distorts typography.
- 3. Ensure Bright, Even Lighting: Capture near a window with daylight or beneath a uniform desk lamp. Avoid shooting with a single light source directly behind you, which casts a dark shadow from your phone or body.
- 4. Tap to Focus: Tap the middle of the text on your phone screen before pressing the shutter button. Ensure the camera locks sharp focus on the printed words.
- 5. Include All Four Corners: Leave a slight margin around the paper booklet so no question numbers, section headers, or instructions are cut off.
